Song Q&A
What’s the song about?
It’s about falling for someone even though you know it’s probably not a good idea — that feeling of trying to resist the pull. The main lyric is “I don’t want to fall in love.”
Where did the idea come from?
The song wasn’t originally about that topic at all — the lyrics came after the fact, from vocal clips I found that I liked the sound of. Once the vocals came in, they completely reoriented the song. It sounded a lot different before that.
How did it come together in the studio/production?
It started with some Splice clips that had a fun, bouncy beat to them. I ended up using those sounds in the more excited parts, but I cut a lot of it back and went with a more sparse sound for most of the song. It ended up more pop-like than anything I’ve produced before — which I think is actually a good thing. Well-produced pop is often very clean, and this pushed me toward more subtraction and simplicity. I want to do more of that.
Favourite moment in the track
There are a few. At the 18-second mark when the bass drops, there’s a little gap in the sound that makes it really impactful. At 1:13 I love when the bouncy sound comes in the background. But my favourite is around 2:20 when the bridge goes crazy with the string sounds — it builds and builds and then gets a bit nuts. Really fun.
One thing listeners might miss
The ending is a lot more melancholy than the rest of the song. It felt like it was previewing the direction the relationship went afterwards — like it’s telling a continuing story. That was my hope anyway.
Any lyrics you’re especially proud of?
I didn’t write the lyrics — I found and used vocal clips. But I liked how it all ended up fitting together.
