Song Q&A
What’s the song about?
“La mítica” means “the legendary one.” The lyrics are a tough, sexy braggadocio swagger — she’s announcing herself. Pure chemistry, epic life, and she wants to be the one running you. It’s got that confidence that doesn’t ask permission.
How this one started
At the very beginning was a very Latin sounding beat. I had just been playing around but I really liked how much the rhythm and beat just stood up. It was almost like a march or something.
I then started playing around with an arrangement, and got it to something I liked a lot, then looked on Splice for some lyrics that sounded good with it. And I was so pleased to find this particular artist, who had just the right sound for the song. It really cemented everything else and made it all come together.
Working with vocals in a language you don’t speak
It did change things a little. I’m embarrassed to say, at first I didn’t even know what the lyrics meant. I had to look them up, and when I did, it did alter where I wanted to position everything a bit.
But it was also a little freeing, because at the beginning I was mostly working with how it sounded, and didn’t have to worry about the meaning of it as much.
What sounds or textures define this track?
I am a sucker for a good bass-line, and to me the rhythm of the singing, the drums, and the synth bass underneath it all is what the song was about. There were some decorations and such that I think are important, but that was the skeleton the song hung itself on.

How this fits into the arc of the work
That’s a really good question. I have been finding a lot of my recent tracks are surprising me. I’m doing some genres I never really expected to: hip hop, Latin, and pop tracks. Lickin’ was a lot about making your way through the world, and this is a different theme than previous.
I don’t know what that says, honestly. A lot of those older themes are certainly still present for me. But I have been trying hard to find peace within the anxiety and horror in the world, and maybe this is a sign that is peeking through!
What were you listening to while making this?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Oklou, and just really paying attention to the production in it. I’ve also had “Run Free (Nite Version)” by Soulwax on repeat — that song just blows me away. And finally, I’ve been listening to “Like I Say (I Runaway)” by Nilüfer Yanya. The wall of sound when the guitars hit is just insane.
