What’s the song about?

It’s about the gap between what you feel inside and what you say out loud to the world around you. The title was deliberate — I wanted the contrast between the name and the music to do some work. The song itself is pretty and delicate, which felt like exactly the right response to the title.

How did it come together in the studio/production?

It’s mostly instrumental, though there are some textural vocal parts — no lyrics. I used filters on the drums to make a kind of shifting background sound, so there’s a lot of movement. That combined with the melody made for a kind of pretty, delicate tone, I thought. There were some droning sounds that managed to sound pretty too. I also used some acid and synth sounds to move things around, and layered drums. I’m really happy with how it turned out.

Favourite moment in the track

I loved when the male vocals came in a little past the halfway point. They really sealed the emotional tenderness of the song for me.
